The A-Kamba tribe is part of Kenyas fourth largest civilization, and is a division of the British East Africa. This tribe lives in the semi-arid hill of Ukambi north of the Nairobi-Mombasa road. The ethnic group within itself has diverse language integrity. Many of the Kamba are bilingual, speak English and communicate in dialects such as Masaku, North Kitui, South Kutur and Mumoni. To the contrary of many tribes who all live together in the same section, this one due to its large population are spread out into different locations within East Africa. They are also divided into four different sections, the reason for this being that some of them have diverse traditions. These four sections are: The A-kamba of Ulu or Ibeti, the A- Kamba of Kibuezi or Kimkumbiulu,
A-Kamba of Kkui and the A- Kamba of Mumoni. Although each of these tribes have their own sections and differ in some traditions, they are all considering the purest Bantu race in the British East Africa.
The A-Kamba tribe is very well known for their great agricultural skills, trading, wood carving skills and also for being involved for a while in armed forces. It is very interesting and astounding they way in which this tribe have successfully made a living in their primary activity which is agriculture, this being that it is in marginal lands in which they have grown. Although they were able to make a living in agriculture, still the poverty of their land was beyond belief. This very sad state of life of the A-Kamba tribe came at a moment in their lives positive, since due to their shocking poverty they remained less affected by the European colonization. They worked for a long time very hard and endured lots of struggle for their independence, this tribe was involved in the post-independence government.
Throughout this website the different characteristics, beliefs and especially wedding traditions of the tribe will be described with great detail. I have encountered that many of the old Kamba traditions have long disappeared or simply have gotten acquainted to the new and modern traditions. Some of the traditions that have been adapted to their beliefs throughout the last decades are religion. social structures, politics and music. Even though I am going to be concentrating in the old A-Kamba traditions, it is good to mention how the traditional music which was drumming. has basically disappeared and has been replaced with a vibrant Kamba pop music, this all being part of the wave of the 1980s.
In the A- Kamba tribe the primary religion is Christianity with a 60% of tribe member converted. There is also a 30% with a traditional religion and only a 1% of Muslims. Although throughout the years and decades the Kamba tribe has revolutionized and westernized, the one thing that has decently remain the same is the important they infatuate upon family. For this tribe family comes first than everything, it is this one of the few traditions social structures to have survived the twentieth century. The name for the family among the tribe is "mosyi". since it is very important for the tribe to have a homestead, it is a primary event the marriage ceremony, since it is in that moment that the foundation of the family starts. Within the day of the marriage ceremony, the family becomes their basic unit of life.
